Know Your Mind

The mind lives in the body. But the exact location from where the mind
operates is still under discussion. It is only a force; and that force gets
weakened when the body gets weaker, due to sickness or old age or
emotions such as anger, hatred, love or suspicion.

But food for the body does not necessarily improve the quality or the
strength of the mind. The main function of the mind is know. It also  create thoughts. It also serves the
purpose of knowing or collecting knowledge.

Have you ever been able to the identify the following phenomena as
results of the changes in your mind.

  • Irritability
  • Anger or hatred
  • Laziness
  • Joy
  • Envy
  • Love
  • Sickness

Watching from a distance or making observations about the nature of
thoughts generated by your mind  from time to time, is one of the best
ways to understand it. It is another way of meditating. It is known as
cittanupassana. It  is one of the four techniques of vipassana meditation

The mind and its significance have not yet been fully understood, even by
the scientific community.  We are still talking of a logic of the heart as
against a logic of the head. It has been a subject of serious discussions
    even during the middle ages.

Given below are some important observations about the mind that  would be useful to you if you are
planning to enter into a new level of happiness.
  • Your mind is your most valuable asset and it is  always under utilized
  • Your mind is your most powerful force and its full  potential is rarely
    exploited.
  • The main purpose of the mind is to know
  • The mind can also generate thoughts
  • There are several levels of force at which your mind can operate.
  • Your mind is also capable of treating  your own  sicknesses,  both
mental and physical. The therapeutic potential of the mind to cure
diseases  has never been fully understood.
  • You can mobilize and increase your mind power to enter
into new echelons of contentment and happiness.
  • Outsiders can clean your mind to make you a different person or give a
different personality. Sometimes  it is know as "brain washing"
  • It is very difficult for you to force your mind to forget things.
  • You can improve, develop and control your mind power.
  • You and only you can develop and control your mind power  for your advantage.
  • There are no doors you cannot open, there are no heights you
cannot reach,  there are no barriers you  cannot penetrate and there is
nothing you cannot do, by   improving your mind power.
  • Happiness is within your easy reach, and only you can
work for your happiness. It can easily be done by
practising  mind control activities, or refining your minds culture.
  • Your body experiences pains and pleasures through your eyes, ears,
nose, tongue and the body [touch]. It always happens with the
collaborative support of the mind. The body  cannot function
without the support  of the mind.
  • Your mind is beautiful, exquisite, glorious, flexible,  very fast and
travels even without any outside support
  • Mobilization of your mind power to capacity needs,   your
    desire, analysis and dedication.
  • Mind control exercises such as meditation and mind culture exercises can improve the strength,
and usefulness of your mind to withstand to pressures

    A note from the editor
It is very difficult to make summary of the mind because  more than
half of the Buddhist philosophy is about the mind.

According to the  "A Manual of Abidhamma by Rev. Narada,
( ISBN967-9920-42-9 published by the Buddhist Missionary
Society of Malaysia."  it is estimated at  84 000 banawaras.
Each banawara has 250 verses of four lines each.
Of the philosophy of Lord Buddha about one half is about the mind
