The Minds Culture

The mind is at wonderful thing and it is your most valuable asset. Even  the
scientific community has not been able to understand it,  using the scientific techniques
that they have been developed for analysing physical objects.

When a child is born, his mind is pristine pure, and has very little or no impurities   in it.
Every day and every year he collects a lot of memories, either through his experiences or
with what his  parents and teachers have told him. Mass media is another source. By the
time he is of your age, a person would have collected a  lot of knowledge, which he
believes that they are from   very reliable sources. But in the majority of the cases, the
reliability of such knowledge units is not perfectly clear, varies between absolute truth
and absolute falsehoods.

Therefore, there is a necessity to  refine your mind, and   add some culture, so that
it gets more acceptable to the society in which you  live and work.

The minds culture referred to herein has two objectives
  • To increase the calm or the tranquility or the one-pointedness of the mind
  • To increase the knowledge  base with insight

[Vipasshana Meditation is another name used for the insight meditation]

The Beginnings
Vipassana meditation has been introduced by Lord Buddha when he
delivered the sermon known as
Satipattana Sutta to the people living in the Kuru
Province in India. In this
sutta Lord Buddha specifically mentions in several places that
the
sutta has the ability to increase the mediator's  memory AND  the power to
concentrate and acquire new knowledge.

It also mentions that
vipassana meditation as described,  has the ability to increase the
insight knowledge of the meditators. That knowledge is new, and is not what one learns
by listening, seeing or by using  the other sense organs of the body.

Your mind is like an uncultured wild beast. It is difficult even to tame that
beast. When that beast is tamed, he has to be trained to attend to certain
functions.  Have you seen a trained elephant  walking majestically
in a procession along with thousands of people, carrying the
sacred relics of the Lord Buddha.

That beast or your mind has  to be tamed and cultured. Practising meditation
regularly is one of the most important solutions. if you are to move up in the
happiness ladder, your mind has to be cultured-- like a GEM
STONE, cut and polished.

One example is sufficient: Who is a good singer? He is one who has mastered the art of
controlling his voice. In the same way you can train your mind--or add culture to your
mind and to make it more useful to you and to the whole world. This training can be
acquired with meditation.
