My name is Sompal. They call me Sompal de Unhappi. That is because of my looks. Looks are deceptive; and I am a very happy person. That is why I am here.
What is your relationship with the HappiCraft? I work in the HappiCraft, the 5-star restaurant boat that ferries people to the Happyraj. It is my responsibility to see that all the travellers who come on board are looked after well; and I should make them happy. That is my job.
How do you do it? When you board the HappiCraft you are a privileged guest of King Happyraj, and you are entitled to royal treatment. Your food and drinks are absolutely free. We have a limited number of beds, in case you decide to rest during the 10-hour journey.
Normally we leave at 8.00 in the night and the guests seep in earlier. From the time they enter, they are served with drinks of their own choice. We have a very good collection of good wines. We normally have a good stock of all the popular brands. A buffet dinner is ready by 9:30 and you can enjoy good quality foods until 5:00 in the morning. I take special care to see that all the requirements of the guests are met, subject of course, to the limitations of international law. I must mention that the ladies are a pampered lot on the HappiCraft.
You say you are a happy person. Do you think majority of the people who board your ship are happy? My personal observation is that all those who board the HappiCraft are on a voyage of discovery—in search of happiness. That is why they go to the Happyraj. The first leg of the voyage is on the HappiCraft. When they board the vessel, they are beaming with great expectations. But during the ten hours they spend on board, all of them are alike. That is the human nature.
On board the HappiCraft, food and drinks are free, and, they normally consume more liquor and food, than their systems could bear. This results in the guests being very tired and unhappy when they leave the vessel. Some of them need special assistance to disembark.
There are two dance floors with three bands, and there is live music non-stop till the morning. Those who engage in dancing to digest the food and drinks they take in excess, appear to be very tired in the morning when the craft docks at the ports in the Happyraj.
My general observation is that no body can achieve happiness by eating, drinking or dancing in excess of what their bodies can withstand. There is sorrow , suffering and sickness when you pass the red line.
I think, happiness is within your reach if you are doing everything in moderation.
What do you recommend?
The golden rule is the golden mean. That was what the early Greek philosophers said. That is moderation. The life is such a complex thing. What ever you do now will reflect on your happiness levels either today or tomorrow. Therefore what you have to do is to select among the opportunities, what will reduce your suffering in the long run, Today is important.
One thing you have to remember. That is, whatever the monies you make, the assets you collect, you will have to leave it behind, when your period ends.
One thing is very clear. It is absolutely necessary that you should draw your boundary lines very clearly, as to what you can do and how much. This is true in respect of every human activity whether it is eating, playing, entertainment, making money or even sex.
While you are young, your expectations and aspirations are very high. You are more bent on activity levels. But when you pass your middle age, you are getting ready to look back at your success and failures.
